Is 30 Too Old To Become A PT?

01 September 2023

Have you ever heard the saying, “Age is just a number”?

It’s true - especially if you’re considering taking up personal training as a career.

So the simple answer is, no. 30 years old is not too old to become a personal trainer.

Being a personal trainer doesn’t have an age limit.

The only limitation is your mindset, knowledge and physical fitness.

In fact, if numbers worry you, according to Insure4Sport, the average age of personal trainers is actually 39 years and 10 months old.

You can make a career out of personal training if you want to. It does not matter how old you are.

And with the fitness industry still growing, it’s not too late to join. David Minton, Director of The Leisure Database Company stated in his latest 2023 report:

“Despite another year of economic slowdown, the fitness industry is continuing to stand strong with both private and public fitness sectors showing record numbers of members, fitness facilities and total market value with the UK penetration rate hitting an all-time high of 12.6%”

This only proves that the opportunity to start a fitness career is there. But why?

Everyone needs fitness - no matter their age, gender, or fitness level.

Exercise is essential for anyone who wants a healthy lifestyle.

Therefore, there is an insane amount of opportunity to tap into niche markets within the fitness industry. Instead of viewing age as a limit, consider it your niche to enter the fitness world.

Why not specialise in fitness for people aged 30 and older? Or you can specialise in other areas of fitness through CPD courses.

Still not convinced that you could become a personal trainer if you’re 30 years old?

The oldest active personal trainer is Tim Minnick who is 77 years old and holds the Guinness World Record for it. Tim only got his personal training certification when he was 74 - proving that age is really just a number!

The most important thing when starting a personal training career is not about your age. It’s about your passion for fitness, willingness to guide others and eagerness to learn new skills to develop your career and help clients achieve their fitness goals.

If you have these drivers, then you can become a personal trainer at any age.

Other things you will need to start your personal training career are a level 2 certificate in fitness instruction and a level 3 diploma in personal training.
