The power of a plant-based diet!

29 October 2021

November kicks off with world vegan day so we decided to dedicate our first blog of the month to bringing you the facts around plant-based living and fitness. Whether you’re a personal trainer or not, there is no doubt that a vegan diet has serious performance-boosting benefits.

More and more people are coming round to a plant-based way of living for multiple reasons such as dietary requirements, animal welfare and environmental/economic concerns. Gone are the days where people believed they couldn’t get their protein from a vegan diet - it’s now common knowledge that vegan foods can also be packed full of the stuff.

So whether you’re a personal trainer considering a vegan diet or a personal trainer with vegan clients, here are the main things you need to know about the power of plant-based life.

High fibre and ferocious

Vegan diets are typically low in fat, high in fibre and can reduce body fat. Reduced body fat is associated with increased aerobic capacity—or the ability to use oxygen to fuel exercise. Studies show that athletes on a plant-based diet increase their VO2 max—the maximum amount of oxygen they can use during intense exercise—leading to better endurance.

Killer cardiovascular health

Plant-based diets are low in cholesterol and saturated fat, which will help you maintain great cardiovascular health. When your cardiovascular system is in good shape, it is easier to breathe, maintain stamina, and stay motivated throughout your workouts. So fill up on those carbohydrate and protein-rich meals such as a hummus and avocado sandwich or a bowl of chilli before you head out to train for the day.

Mega Muscles

Bodies under a lot of physical stress require more calories than an average person. Putting stress on joints takes a toll physically, including causing inflammation. By increasing the number of veggies in your diet, you will replenish the glycogen stores as well as antioxidants that help reduce inflammation. Allowing muscles to recover faster!
