Why Personal trainers are vital in the fight against Coronavirus

20 May 2020

It’s no secret that during these ‘lockdown days’ that we have all been plunged into, the general public has been searching for ways to occupy their time and as we’ve been given the green light to partake in daily exercise, many people have taken to running the streets or local parks. Some people have set up home gyms to ensure that their regular workout routines don’t begin to suffer, which may also hinder their long-term goals. Others have even dusted off their bicycles to get in daily exercise, whilst also seeing the outside for a while and breathing in some fresh air.

It’s easy to see why the general public have recently increased their exercise intake but not everyone knows the true benefits of staying fit and healthy during these times. It could be even more vital than you could have ever imagined.

Recent research has shown that people who have a BMI of 30 or higher, tend to be much more susceptible to Covid-19. The scientific evidence that has been discovered shows that anyone who falls into the category of being obese places significant strain on their immune system and respiratory system. In the UK alone, 30% of adults are classed as obese and 1 in 4 people, who have tragically lost their lives to this virus, were also diabetic.

So, it’s no surprise to hear that the health and fitness industry including personal trainers has been categorised as essential businesses. There has already been a direct correlation between the NHS and the fitness sector, as they work alongside many different organisations in helping to aid the vulnerable and those with underlying health issues. There have been difficulties in trying to assist those who need workers in this industry but through video calling and streaming programmes, it is possible to help and support people who are looking to make positive changes to their health and well-being during these times of uncertainty.

It’s clearly apparent that a strong immune system and good metabolic health is extremely important when combating this virus and a physical and healthy lifestyle will fight infection much more efficiently. Therefore, personal trainers and fitness professionals must be primed, prepared and ready to help the public fight this virus and play a key role in rehabilitating those who may already be infected.

So, stay healthy, keep up the hard work, take advantage of your right to exercise, and your right to train and help others during this lockdown period. Remember as fitness professionals, we play a vital role in helping the nation fight back against this terrible virus!
